Young boy struck by garda car on O’Connell Street

LIMERICK city centre motorists found themselves gridlocked this Monday lunchtime after a 12-year-old boy was injured in a road traffic accident involving a garda patrol car. The youth was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle but his injuries were believed not to be life threatening.

The incident happened on O’Connell Street this Monday when it is believed that cars at the junction of O’Connell Street and Sarsfield Street and William Street were stopped at the traffic lights. The young boy was crossing the road from Penney’s to the Cruises Street side of the road when the collision occurred. The windscreen of the garda patrol car was smashed in the incident and the two members of the An Garda Siochana were believed to be in a state of shock.

The Garda Ombudsman has been contacted and will conduct inquiries into and surrounding the incident.

Motorists experienced delays as the road was closed off for a period of time to allow technical investigations take place.
