MOTORISTS in the Mid West are being targeted for excessive or inappropriate speeding under a new phase of the Road Safety Strategy.
With speed continuing to be a significant factor in road traffic collisions, Inspector Paul Reidy, notes that the roll-out GoSafe mobile camera units this week, will “help to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our roads”.
Gardai will target their approach to speed enforcement where mobile speed cameras will be placed at predetermined noted blackspots.
Their aim will be to create awareness, reduce speeds and to prosecute speeders.
An extensive analysis of the collision history on the road network where speed was a contributory factor has been completed, and Inspector Reidy says that the “highly visible vans will be operating at 53 locations throughout the city and county”.
Based on the analysis gathered by the gardai and other authorities, a list of Speed Enforcement Zones has been developed with the aim of providing information to motorists in order to raise awareness.
An Garda Síochána will utilise these zones in order to direct speed enforcement activity through their partner GoSafe, who are being paid a flat rate to provide the service.
Motorist detected speeding by the cameras and their operators will be liable to incur penalty points and fines.
The programme began its roll-out this week and is expected to be fully operational by February.
This Monday morning, just hours before the programme was to go live, the website of An Garda Siochana crashed as motorists rushed to check where the mobile cameras would be set up. It has since been updated to cope with volumes. www.garda.ie carries a full list by county of the areas of detection.
