Limerick baker boys head to UK

A GROUP of bakers from Limerick Youth Service will travel to Stoke-on-Trent in June for the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees (ABST) annual conference. Paul Oโ€™Brien is an instructor for the bakery project at the LYS community training centre. The event gives students an opportunity to see what the standard is like across the water. โ€œA small group travelled last year and had an excellent experience. It gave them a chance to see what the standard of baking was like in England.

โ€œSome of the lads got great ideas for projects that they worked on when they came homeโ€.
Paul established a Bakery Society for participants in the course two years ago so they could improve their skills outside of their training hours.
โ€œThe bakery courses provide certified training in both craft and commercial baking to prepare learners for a career in catering, but the society is more fun.
โ€œWe get the group in to experiment with their baking.
โ€œWe have a large group and meet every Thursday for three hours at the training centreโ€.
The society has been fundraising for their trip.
It is planned to take part in some of the Stoke competitions.
Added Paul: โ€œLast year the standard was incredible. I think some of the lads are keen to competeโ€.
However, it will not be all about the baking.
โ€œThe conference will be held at the Alton Towers Theme Park, so we will have plenty of funโ€.
