Mr Binman pleads guilty to two safety charges

A LIMERICK based waste collection and recycling company has appeared before Limerick Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to two charges where they failed to safely manage and conduct work activities and ensure the safety, health and welfare of their employees at Luddenmore, Grange, county Limerick, in 2008.
The charges relate to an incident where a Mr Binman employee died as a result of an onsite accident.

64-year-old John Wright, Glenmore, Caherdavin, was killed while working at the waste site in county Limerick on March 21, 2008.
At Limerick Circuit Court this week, Mr Binman faced charges where it failed to manage and conduct work activities in such a way as to ensure that so far as was reasonably practicable the safety, health and welfare of its employees required by sections of legislation within the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005. The breaches contrary to the legislation are in connection with the company’s loading shovel operations and the fact that they were carried out without adequate measures to segregate pedestrians from vehicular traffic and the safe circulation of pedestrians and vehicles as a consequence of which its employee, John Wright, suffered personal injury and died.  A second charge before the court outlined that Mr Binman failed to ensure that their outdoor place of work at Luddenmore, Grange, county Limerick, was organised in such a manner so as to ensure that pedestrians and vehicles could circulate safely.  A company nominee and chief financial officer, Stephen O’Donovan, appeared on behalf of Mr Binman and entered a guilty plea to the charges before the court.
The company will be sentenced on July 27 next.
