Villainous barons,ย vases and soprano
โSIR William Hamilton, the Fake Baron and the British Museumโs Sunken Vasesโ is the intriguing title of a Hunt Museum lecture.ย ย It will be given by Dr Dominique Bouchard, curator of Education and Outreach on Tuesday October 4ย at 1pm and admission is free.
Sir William Hamiltonโs collections were formed in Naples, where he was ambassadorย in the 18th century during that cityโs golden age. His collections brought together many objects which were fascinating to him.
โIn the 1760s, Hamilton employed the so-called Baron DโHancarville into his home to manage the publication of his first vase collection,โ reports Dr Bouchard. โThe man chosen by Hamilton arrived in Naples in October 1763 already preceded by a reputation as , at best, an adventurer, and at worst a swindler..โ.
