Choral singing  – feel the love
LIMERICK is host to some National Choral Singing Week events, the week October 8  to 16 that coincides with World Mental Health Week, also Limerick Mental Health Week. We are invited to attend a concert of song by Limerick Choral Union, UL Choral Society and others directed by LCU’s Malcolm Green at St John’s  Cathedral this Friday 14 at 7.30pm. Free in to all.
This will be on of c. 110 events taking place nationwide that promotes the practice and concept of choral singing as a boost to mental health.

According to Malcolm Green, a psychoterapist by profession: “There has been much research carried out recently on the benefits to emotional and physical health by singing regularly in a choir. It improves concentration and keeps body and mind exercised”.
He is working with Limerick Gospel Choir’s Richella Hughes, Ancór’s Cecilia Madden, Presentation Secondary School choir’s Gabriel Lee Casey, Seoda’s Maire Keary Scanlon.

Beginners Scriptwriting Course 2011
ELEANOR O’Keeffe McSherry is facilitator for  intensive sessions in the discipline of writing on a Saturday basis until November 12.  Taking place at The Frank McCourt Museum on Hartstonge Street and organised by Limerick Writers’ Centre, McSherry’s course is “devoted to exploring the ins and outs of scriptwriting.  It is geared towards those with little or no previous experience in the field”.
The course will entail an introduction to the craft of screenwriting – developing character, writing the individual scene, dialogue, structure, format, rewriting techniques and writing treatments.

Poetry, Lyrics and Versification.
‘RELEASING the Poet Within’ is a six week course is designed to inspire writers to discover/extend their poetic voice. Existing poets and lyricists may explore new directions while those seeking to write poetry for the first time will find a springboard for their ideas and style.

Lunchtime concerts at cathedral
ST Mary’s Cathedral music programme continues to delight and entertain us for free on regular Wednesday lunch hours. Attend to a busy October of such recitals, organised with a variety of musicians, instruments and composition choices.
Wednesday 19 and 26 at the usual hours of 1.15pm to 2pm feature next. There is a collection made for cathedral music should you wish to contribute.
October 19: Dr Eric Sweeney on organ introduces an all Lizst programme, celebrating the 200th anniversary of this Hungarian master.
October 26: Stephen Knies on violin is joined by David McNulty on piano for works by Szymanowski and Prokofiev.
