Division 1A
Garryowen v Young Munster
Garryowen’s season is taking shape after Munster Senior Cup success and last week’s win at Cork Con. Home form remains a concern as they head into this weekend’s derby clash without a UBL win at Dooradoyle. Young Munster were full value for their 14 man win over Shannon in Round 4, but Ger Slatterry’s red card could have repercussions this weekend. League leaders Clontarf are away to Cork Con, meaning the Cookies could go top. Garryowen would be happy with a draw.
Verdict: Hurrah for Garryowen, win for Young Munsters.
Shannon v Old Belvedere
Shannon’s momentum was slowed by Young Munster last weekend but they remain in contention thanks to results elsewhere. Tadhg Bennett made a welcome return at stand-off, but there should still be room for Gareth Quinn-McDonagh in the side. Champions Old Belvedere are rock bottom after a dismal run but Shannon must be wary – Belvo have still managed to be top scorers in the division.
Verdict: Shannon to win, and maybe even score a try.
Division 1B
Bruff v UL Bohemians
Bruff were well out muscled in their loss to UCD last week but focus is also becoming an issue – Peter Malone’s side have conceded the first score in each of their 4 league outings to date. Defeat here could even set relegation nerves jangling. For the opposition, UL Bohs know a loss in County Limerick would be a major blow to promotion hopes. But if they can nullify the scoring threat of Bruff’s back row, they could kick their way to victory. Unlikely to be a classic.
Verdict: Plenty of bite under lights – Bruff to shade it.
Division 2A
Dublin University v Old Crescent
Old Crescent will be kicking themselves for letting Seapoint end their unbeaten run last weekend. But there are no frontrunners in Division 2A and the Rosbrien men lie just 3 points off the lead ahead of their trip to Trinity’. Dublin University are an expansive team and tend to enjoy their best results in the spring. That said, they ground out a 9-6 in the Wild West last weekend.
Verdict: The Dubs to rub it in.
Thomond v Greystones
A last gasp try gave Thomond their 2nd win of the campaign in Round 4. Ger Finucane’s 14 point haul will boost his confidence, as will home advantage as the Blues go in search of their third win in a row. Greystones are a quick thinking side who look comfortable in this division. Scrumhalf Cillian Willis returns to the side after a recent run with Leinster.
Verdict: Thomond to have ‘stones in their pockets.
