Bridge restoration work praised

REGARDED by many as the jewel in the crown of Limerick city’s bridges, the restoration of the Victorian Lamp Standards on Sarsfield Bridge has been welcomed by Sean Griffin, member of he city council’s environment committee. Referring also to the work being carried out on the under-structure of the bridge, which was designed by the world famous architect, Alexander Nemo and based on the Point Neuilly Bridge in Paris, Mr Griffin said that coupled with the work on the under structure that is currently n progress, “this specialist work will go a long way towards restoring the bridge to its former glory.

“It has taken a long time to get to this venture but when it is complete, the city will have an architectural gem that it once again can be proud of. It will also hopefully, mean that those god awful “string of pearl lights” can be removed from the parapet forever”.
To complete the bridge refurbishment, Mr Griffin is urging the council to also “have the vision to clean and restore the 1916 Memorial on the bridge and remove the bushes that are obscuring the Clancy/O’Callaghan memorial at the Strand Hotel.”.
