ICOโs โMozart by Moonlightโ
PORTUGUESE conductor Joana Carneiro has stacked up major awards in conducting competitions. Coveted offers followed and she was appointed director of the Los Angeles Debut Orchestra (2002-5), the same year she was named an American Symphony Orchestra League Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
In 2009, Dr Carneiro achieved another milestone when she was named the Berkeley Symphony Orchestraโs third music director. She is also guest conductor of the Gulbenkian.
Sheโs in UCH on Thursday March 29 to conduct the Irish Chamber Orchestra for a concert titled โMozart by Moonlightโ, featuring his โSymphony No. 29 in A majorโ. This first ever association with the ICO will also feature Elaine Agnewโs short work โTwilightโ alongside Schoenbergโs โTransfigured Nightโ.
Book at the concert hall for the 8pm romance.
Callino Quartet, clarinet and klezmer
THE Callino Quartet is joined by UK clarinettist Sarah Beaty in a tour that takes it to Limerickโs St Maryโs Cathedral on Saturday March 24.โPresented as one of the Church Classics series of concerts, the tour is funded by Arts Council and supported by RTE LyricFM.
Callino Quartet will open the programme with Franz Joseph Haydnโs String Quartet in D Major Op.64 No.5, โThe Lark.โโ
Haydn is considered the father of the string quartet and the Callinos did a three year project with an Arts Council Award studying and performing Haydnโs works.โโ Following this most beautiful and elegant string quartet, the quartet is joined by Sarah Beaty for a recent piece by David Bruce called โGumbootsโ. Starting out as a tranquil piece, it develops into five ever-more-lively โgumboot dancesโ, often joyful and always vital.
After the interval the quintet will play โThe Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blindโ, written by Argentinean composer Olsvaldo Golijov for string quartet and klezmer clarinets.โ A major work, it covers the entire spectrum of life and death including wildly exciting Jewish dancing.
Tickets at cathedral door for 8pm, Saturday 24.
