Ulster Bank League Weekend Previews 24/3/12

THE Ulster Bank League is back this weekend after a few well deserved weekends off. Ross O’Donoghue is here once more to cast his eye over the fixture list and preview all the upcoming action.

DIVISION 1A
Garryowen v Old Belvedere
Garryowen’s first non-derby game in over a month. 2012 has been going well with a Bateman Cup final to look forward to and 5th position in the league. Back to back games against Shannon yielded 7 points but the light blues are unlikely to catch the breakaway trio in Division 1A. Old Belvedere look certain for the drop.
Verdict: Garryowen’s focus will see them through.

Shannon v Cork Constitution
Shannon will finish the season without a win in a Limerick league derby. A draw in the re-scheduled Garryowen fixture was the most they could muster, but the 2 points were a big help in keeping clear of relegation. The Parish are winless in 4 games but at least their relegation fate is in their own hands. Cork Con are re-emerging.
Verdict: Con to rock on.

Young Munster v Clontarf
The one they’ve been waiting for. A chance to get back on top. The Tom Clifford faithful have been building towards this fixture and leaders Clontarf can expect a vigorous welcome to Limerick. 3 players from each side started the club rugby international against England and the back row battle here will be key. ‘Munsters need to win by 8. Verdict: Young Munster by a (broken) nose.

DIVISION 1B
UL Bohemian v UCD
UL Bohemian’s win rate for 2012 is 71%. It’s a decent return after an inconsisent start but it still can’t get the Robins into striking distance of the main contenders in Division 1B. They’re 8 points off leaders Belfast Harlequins but just 3 points off a promotion play off spot. UCD are high on ability but low on attitude.
Verdict: Bohs to come out on top in University Challenge.

Belfast Harlequins v Bruff
It’s tight at the top but its tougher at the bottom in Division 1B. UCC look set for relegation while 3 teams share the play-off spot. Bruff are in that relegation mix and it could get worse before it gets better. Free scoring Harlequins earned top spot with 6 wins in a row but defeat in Round 14 could offer hope.
Verdict: Losing BP would do for Bruff.

DIVISION 2A
Corinthians v Old Crescent
Safe with 3 games to play. Not commensurate with ambitions at Rosbrien but a big improvement on last season. And they’ve earned the right to relax a bit with 3 impressive wins in a row. Old Crescent are 10th and can target a top half finish to maintain momentum. 6th place Corinithians could be vulnerable if they ease off the gas.
Verdict: OC to run the Westerners close.

Thomond v Queens University
Thomond are just a point clear of a relegation play-off but its no time to be harsh on them. The Woodview men have battled hard all season and have been punching above their weight for a while now. A friendly against Bruff kept them busy over the weekend – the step up in quality will prove decent preparation for promotion hopefuls Queens University.
Verdict: Sodacakes to take a losing BP

Best of luck to all teams this weekend from all at the Limerick Post Sports desk.
