GARDAI are on the alert for illegal fireworks in the run up to Halloween and have issued a safety warning to those planning to celebrate the event. Every year serious injuries are caused by fireworks. Section 68 of the Explosives Act 1975 makes it an offence to ignite a firework or cause it to be lit or to throw, direct or propel a firework at a person or property. It is also an offence to possess a firework with intent to sell or supply to another person.

A person convicted under this legislation is liable to a fine of up to €2,500 and 6 months imprisonment on summary conviction and up to 5 years imprisonment on conviction on indictment.
