UNIVERSITY of Limerick history lecturer David Fleming has released his second book, which recounts the history of the university since its opening in 1972.ย Coinciding with ULโs 40th anniversary, โThe University of Limerick: A Historyโ, details the collegeโs growth, achievements and the place it occupies in Limerick today.ย The book also recounts the experiences of some of ULโs past and present presidents, governors, staff and students.ย Mr Fleming is the author of โPolitics and provincial people: Sligo and Limerick, 1691โ1761โ, published in 2010.ย ย Last year he edited, with John Logan, โPauper Limerick: the register of the Limerick House of Industryโ.

The Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau, in conjunction with Shannon Development, has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting Limerickโs designation as the first National City of Culture in 2014. More than 70 people involved in the local arts and cultural sector attended the launch of the โI Am A Limerick Cultural Ambassadorโ programme, which will see professional support and advice being offered to individuals or organisations planning to bring arts and cultural events to Limerick in 2014.ย The programme is designed to provide a targeted approach to attracting conferences and events to Limerick.

A memorial mass in appreciation of the life and work of the late Professor Etienne Rynne will be celebrated at St. Maryโs Church, Athlunkard Street, Limerick on Saturday, November 24 at 12 noon. Professor of Archaeology at NUI Galway, he had a long association with Limerick and Clare as a member of the Thomond Archaeological Society and editor of its journalย the โNorth Munster Antiquarian Journalโ for over thirty-five years.ย ย Professor Rynne had many family connections with Limerick and Clare, in particular with the OโMara family of Limerick. Former National Museum Director Dr. Pat Wallace will give an address at the memorial Mass.
