New Antibiotic App from University Hospital Limerick

-

Doctot – the Limerick based medical app developer has just launched its latest Medical App –Antibiotic. This new iPhone App has been developed in collaboration with the Departments of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Pharmacy at University Hospital Limerick.

Antibiotic was developed by the health informatics group, Doctot. The group which was established three years ago by Professor Declan Lyons, Fergal McDonnell and Macdara Butler has produced 18 medical apps to date in a variety of clinical areas.

This latest App has been developed in collaboration with consultant microbiologists Drs Nuala O’Connell, Dr Lorraine Power and Ann Hartnet senior lecturer in clinical pharmacology.

At the launch of the App last week in Limerick, Dr O’Connell said that; “healthcare associated infections (HCAIs)  can largely be prevented by adherence to three basic infection control principles: hand hygiene, environmental hygiene and prudent antimicrobial prescribing. New technologies can support HCAI strategies by helping get things done differently, effectively and more reliably. Smartphones and other mobile devices are widely used by clinicians to access point of care information to guide their clinical management. We believe that this is a high quality App that will promote rational Antibiotic prescribing.”

Docot’s Antibiotic App has been developed by clinicians for clinicians with the assistance of pharmacists and information technology experts. It serves as a guide to treatment of the more commonly seen infections. The availability of antimicrobial prescribing guidelines in a device that clinicians have access to at the point of care makes it more likely that a patient will be prescribed the most appropriate antibiotic for their infection and in a timely manner. This App also provides information on the correct diagnostic samples that should be taken as well as additional functionality including therapeutic drug monitoring as well as clinical calculators such as those for renal and hepatic dosing, creatinine clearance, ideal body weight dosing and CURB scoring.

The App is being made available to the medical staff of University Hospital Network Limerick and can be obtained on the App Store.
