Jerry Flannery previews England game

Jerry Flannery has been speaking to the Paddy Power blog this week. As usual, the big man has pulled no punches. Enjoy

Q โ€“ What did you think of Jim Teflerโ€™s comments on the English Rugby team?

A – Telfer tried to portray the English team as a bunch of arrogant dicks. Thereโ€™s no denying the English are the team everyone likes to beat. But this stereotype isnโ€™t fair and Iโ€™ve never found the English players to be particularly arrogant. OK, Iโ€™ll admit James Haskell isnโ€™t short on confidence, to say the least, but I know a few guys who have played with him over in Wasps and they say heโ€™s a good banter. Heโ€™s an excellent example of the drive some of the English players have to self-promote. Like that โ€˜Dieux du Stadeโ€™ naked calendar. I half-think he moved to Paris just to get in the calendar. Anyway, Telfer came out with these stereotypes from years back to label the Welsh and English players. The idea of the English players being this incredibly arrogant bunch and the Welsh lads being lazy is bullshit. Itโ€™s a professional game and these preconceptions are wrong.

Q โ€“ Where does the perceived arrogance around the England team come from?

A – The perceived arrogance with the English team is largely down to how theyโ€™re built up in the media. The players are heavily promoted with Sky Sports and ESPN who are invested in telling us: โ€˜Weโ€™re seeing world-class talent.โ€™ A young player can have a handful of good games and suddenly theyโ€™re talking about him being the โ€˜next big thingโ€™ because thatโ€™s what sells tickets. It gets magnified when Dewi Morris and Stuart Barnes hype the upcoming matches by talking up new players unrealistically. Then those lads get thrown in and theyโ€™re expected to be world beaters. And when these young lads don’t perform to the unreasonable hype, people rip them apart. People also tend to look at English players that try to drive their profile in the media through self-promotion as arrogant. You canโ€™t blame the players as thereโ€™s much more money in the UK for lads to earn off the field so theyโ€™re more enthusiastic about self-promotion because thereโ€™s a chance theyโ€™ll land a fat stack endorsement contract.

Q โ€“ Why is it not the same with the Irish players generally?

A – The Irish market is much smaller so thereโ€™s less incentive for the Irish lads to pump their profile off the pitch, as they’re not going to make as much coin from it. Traditionally, the likes of Brian Oโ€™Driscoll, Paul Oโ€™Connell and now Rob Kearney and Johnny Sexton โ€“ theyโ€™re the lads whoโ€™ll tend to attract the bigger off-field contracts. BOD has deservedly made money from off-the-field endorsement deals but I donโ€™t think anybody who has watched his commitment and how much he has put his body on the line for his country would begrudge him a cent. He has done well from his success on the pitch, but heโ€™s a smart guy and heโ€™s never let it define him. Every time he steps out onto the field โ€“ even when itโ€™s in training โ€“ heโ€™s just such a competitor. He constantly delivers for his country. When we saw him against Wales, you got a really good view of both sides of his game. Yes, there were the moments of flair, but he put an incredible amount of work into the breakdown, turning balls over. Heโ€™s the complete player. Having ability and talent is one thing, but when you can back it up with the mental strength and drive that Oโ€™Driscoll has, it makes a very special player. He may not be captain anymore, but he was the best player against Wales.

Q โ€“ What will the result of Ireland vs England be at the weekend?

A – Itโ€™s because of him [BOD] (and a few others) that weโ€™re going to beat England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday. Itโ€™s fair to say that motivation is never going to be an issue for any Irishman playing against England this weekend but also to beat England, particularly after their win over the All Blacks in the autumn, is real benchmark of our standing in the rugby world. Come Sunday weโ€™ll have too much for England. Ireland have experience running through the spine of our team with the likes of Best, Heaslip, Sexton, and Kearney. England donโ€™t have as many โ€˜stalwartsโ€™ there as they have had in the past. Every team is going to have lads who can carry balls โ€“ and we have that as well โ€“ but we have that little bit of X Factor thanks to Oโ€™Driscoll and Simon Zebo. Zebs is just an incredible player and itโ€™s scary (obviously not for me because I fear nothing) when you think how good he could become. Every time heโ€™s been asked to step up, he responds.

Q โ€“ Who are Englandโ€™s players to look out for?

A – England do a lot right. Theyโ€™re strong, can dominate the set pieces and theyโ€™re hard runners. Manu Tuilagi is the big danger to Ireland, if he plays. Heโ€™s got the explosive power, but heโ€™s also got the skills so youโ€™ve got to watch him. Chris Robshaw had a great game too against Scotland and heโ€™s really growing as a leader. Ben Youngs and Owen Farrell did very well too. Chris Ashton is one of those players everyone wants to hate, but youโ€™ve got to respect that heโ€™s a poacher and a very dangerous player. The worry about this Sunday is Englandโ€™s forward power. The scrum battle is going to be huge and England have a lot of confidence in their own scrum. When Mike Ross went off against Wales it was a big blow to us because he anchors our scrum. He got hurt and needed to go off. If that happens us at the weekend โ€“ and that’s what happened to us last year at Twickenham โ€“ weโ€™re in trouble. That said, it was good to get Declan Fitzpatrick on the field against Wales as heโ€™ll have benefitted from the experience if called upon on Sunday if Ross breaks down again.

Q โ€“ Can you give us a couple of predictions?

A – Weโ€™ve a great chance this Sunday and, if we win, a great chance of a Grand Slam. This is the possibly the best chance of a Slam weโ€™ve had for a long time. I canโ€™t help but feel confident. This Irish team seems to have a great balance between youth and experience and this is gonna be crucial in managing the expectation. We have an unbelievable chance this year.
