HOW many of us have looked at Joyceโs โUlyssesโ, wanting to be able to read and โgetโ this world classicโฆ and been defeated? One guilty hand in the air here and a sense of appreciation that โA Taste of Joyceโ is heading for Limerick.
According to Meave McGrath of PayDay Productions, the group behind Lunchtime Theatre at the Savoy, booking a โA Taste of Joyceโ this week was โbecauseย of Bloomsday being in June, it was the right time. I had seen this Orianna Productions show last year in Cork Arts Centre and thought it was a lovely piece. In it we have music, a selection of readings, singing, all centred on โUlyssesโ.
โFor director Maureen OโByrne it was a real labour of love. โA Taste of Joyceโ has been highly successful, has toured andย is invited back to Corkโ.
OโByrne had been to Lunchtime Theatre at Savoy and approached PayDay Productions for a slot, which delighted the Limerick based company.
No fear of this Thursday June 27, Friday June 28 (the last of each month) theatre run falling fallow over the Summer. Meave makes the point that in July 2012, Fregoliโs โSweet Shopโ was their first sell out show and โit is tourists who replace any regular audience not around for the season.
โIn July 2013 we have two shows, Myles Breenโs โA Chip in the Sugarโ by Alan Bennett for the lunch and teatime slots and for Friday July 26 and Saturday 26 evening shows at 8pm, we have โTANโ comedy by Ann Blake and Marie Boylanโ.
Back to June. Book this weekโs โA Taste of Joyceโ on [email protected] for Thursday 27, Friday 28’s 1pm ย show and soup/ sandwiches for โฌ10 or ย for Thursday 27 at 6pm, with wine and nibbles at this Henry Street hotel.
