Minister Deenihan to meet Limerick city of Culture Board and ensure local involvement

HAVING secured over €6m in funding for the year long project of Limerick as the national city of culture for 2014, Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht said he will meet with the board in the coming days and ensure that there is a more “local artistic involvement” with them.

Thanking Patricia Ryan for her “considerable ” efforts in the wake of get resignation late on Sunday evening from the position of CEO, Minister Deenihan said ” I know that she has worked very hard to ensure that the year would be a successful one for Limerick, and I wish her well for the future.

“It is important that we move forward in a calm and measured way.”

The people of Limerick, he said “expect and deserve a varied programme of events to take place this year.

“That programme is designed. Over 100 events are scheduled to take place in the first quarter. Significant funding is in place.

“Greater local artistic involvement in the Limerick City of Culture Board will be ensured, and a new Director will be appointed.

“I have been in contact with the local authority and those managing the programme of events for the year. I plan to meet with representatives of the local authority and the board in the coming days, and I am also in contact with members of the local community.”

The minister concluded that “Working together, I know that all partners can ensure that the best of Limerick is showcased to a national and international audience this year.”
