UL Huskies in Live TV Final

UL Huskies v Killester - Basketball Ireland Women's National Cup Semi-Final 2014THE UL Huskies Women’s basketball team will look to make history this Friday 24 night as they their third National Cup title in a row. A feat which has never been achieved.

The Women’s final between UL Huskies and Team Montenotte Hotel will be televised live on Setanta Sports with the National Basketball Arena selling out early in the week.

Defending champions UL Huskies reversed the result from their most recent league meeting with Killester to beat the Dublin ladies 80 to 59 in the semi final as UL’s Rachael Vanderwal rained in 26 points.

The Cork side outlasted their old rivals DCU Mercy in an exciting and bruising encounter that finished 62 to 53.

Led by an inspired Emilee Harmon who contributed 25 points and 13 rebounds, Montenotte were deserving winners and now set up a rematch of the 2013 final, which they lost by 10 points.

The live coverage of the 2014 finals will commence at 6.30pm on Friday 24 with the Women’s final between UL Huskies and Team Montenotte Hotel tipping off at 6.45pm before the Men’s final involving C&S UCC Demons and Dublin Inter begins at 8.45pm.

In other basketball news, Limerick Lakers under 20’s side, for the first time in the club’s history won the Cork Basketball Cup with victory over Neptune of Cork.

This under 20 team has been together since they started playing at u/8 level.

Lakers were behind on the scoreboard by 10 points at the end of the first quarter. With each successive quarter they narrowed the margins going into the last quarter trailing by just  5 points. The team showed tremendous spirit and with six seconds on the clock they were one point ahead. Two free throws from Jamie McAuliffe ended the game with a 3 point winning margin bringing the Cork cup home to Limerick.
