‘Personal Choice’ Exhibition Opens

By Joseph Chaplin

Acclaimed Limerick and Irish artist John Shinnors’ ‘Personal Choice’ exhibition opened at the Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) last Friday, March 28. The event showcases 20 artists of Shinnors’ choice from the college’s 50-year history. Held on LSAD’s Clare Street campus, the show celebrates Limerick’s recent history of art, and is part of the National City of Culture celebrations.

Mike Fitzpatrick is responsible for the event, as LSAD Head of School and interim Head of Limerick City of Culture. He approached Mr. Shinnors about creating an exhibition celebrating art’s impact on Limerick and Irish culture. Shinnors, a longtime friend of Fitzpatrick’s, decided on an exhibit, ‘Personal Choice’ that would showcase 20 past luminaries of the school.

Mr. Shinnors explained his choices for the exhibition: “The artists I have asked to participate in this exhibition are makers and creators and while having a lively sense of tradition, all have an imaginative and original response to the subject matter they’re engaged with. This results in their work being both stimulating and inspiring. I thank them for accepting my invitation to participate in this exhibition.”

The event was opened by Finance Minister Michael Noonan and runs until April 25,  Monday to Friday.
