Thieves targeted a national school in Pallaskenry shortly after nightfall last Saturday when up to โ‚ฌ600 worth of fuel was stolen. Heating oil was also stolen from a soccer club in Askeaton shortly before midnight the following night.

Diesel was siphoned from a number of lorries parked overnight at Foynes Port late last month while a county Limerick coach transport company was also targeted by what Gardaรญ believe is a criminal gang operating in rural locations.

Limerick city and county councillor Emmett O’Brien, who is a members of the council’s Joint Policing Committee, said that “thieves are stooping even lower as a number of private cars have been broken in to while their owners have attended funerals.

“Gardaรญ are doing their best to tackle this but they are under resourced in the area. The Government should come to the aid of the ordinary people of rural Ireland and provide us with adequate numbers of Gardaรญ.

“I have repeatedly called on the government to adequately recruit members to the force and I have repeatedly highlighted the heroic work already done through the stretched resources available to Gardaรญ in County Limerick who are doing their best against continuing levels of danger,โ€ he said.

Meantime, repeat offenders are to be targeted in an extensive reform of the law on bail thatis planned by Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald.

The Minister is working on proposals to protect the public from offences committed by people out on bail.
