TWO planes carrying passengers to and from holiday destinations had to make emergency landings at Shannon airport on Thursday after passengers became ill on board.

Both planes were flying routes for the Thompson’s holiday group. The first flight was en route from Cancun, Mexico, to Manchester.

Air traffic control were alerted to a problem when the flight was 500km west of Shannon when the pilot requested priority landing and high speed approach.

The flight continued its journey a few hours later.

The second emergency involved a flight from Manchester to the Cape Verde islands, landing just before 9am and taking off again a little more than an hour later.
