20131228-2209491LOCAL councillors believe that a major upgrade of the main access road to Adare is “premature”.

The €1 million project includes pavement rehabilitation, drainage and footpath work on the N21 in the picturesque county Limerick village. The scheme, which will extend from the R519 Ballingarry Road to the L1422 Blackabbey Road over a distance about 1.3km on the N21, is due to start next year.

However, Fine Gael councillor Stephen Keary said at this month’s Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District meeting, that the works should be “stalled” until after the Foynes/Limerick route is announced.

“We’ve waited this long, why not wait a bit longer?” he asked.

“Ye need to go back to the drawing board or else shelve it,” he told members of the Mid West National Road Design Office.

Fianna Fail councillor Kevin Sheahan said he had an “uncomfortable feeling” about the scheme.

“It doesn’t make any sense. It shouldn’t happen until we hear where the Foynes route is going to be,” he added.
