COMPOSER Jรถrg Widmann is a gifted clarinettist who embodies something that cannot be taken for granted. He has written an impressive number of works including chamber music, often with the clarinet at their core: for stage, also large scale orchestral and an opera.
Widmann is often described as a modern day Mozart, given his output, sense of play, love of talking and the speed at which he creates. Donโt miss an opportunity to catch him in concert with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at UCH here on Wednesday December 2 and CIT Cork, Thursday 3, 8pm curtain.
This exciting programme features gems by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Varess alongside one of his own Quartets.
The strings and bassoons create an atmosphere of suppressed excitement reaching a joyous conclusion in โThe Marriage of Figaroโ, one of Mozartโs operatic successes.
Widmannโs string quartets are made of virtuosic stuff, both mentally and musically.
Quartet No. 1 was written over an eight year period and takes the listener on a romp through his imagination.
Veressโ โSonatina for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoonโ and Mendelssohnโs โString Symphony No. 8 in D majorโ was written at age 14. He liked it so much that he added winds, making it Mendelssohnโs first fully orchestrated work.
