AN overnight fire in Limerick City Centre has caused extensive damage to a Japanese restaurant.

Three Units from the Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the blaze at the Taikichi restaurant shortly after 3.30am on Thursday morning.

On arrival, crews were met with flames emerging from the window of the ground floor restaurant at the O’Connell Street property.

Search crews, equipped with breathing apparatus kits, were deployed to search and evacuate the area.

A number of nearby residents were evacuated from their apartments while the blaze was brought under control.

Although extensive damage was caused to the restaurant building, no one was injured as a result.

A clean-up operation is underway and forensic investigation will ascertain the cause of the blaze.
