REACH out, don’t despair, there’s always someone there to talk.

That is the message emerging this Christmas to those struggling to cope with life, mental illness or severe depression.

The plea to reach out to any of the agnecies or services comes after a number of incidents at the River Shannon and the city’s waterways in recent weeks, including the latest emergency call-out during the early hours of this Christmas Eve when a male was seen at Athlunkard Bridge looking in to the water.

A passerby saw the male as he drove by and turned his car around to go back to assist the male.

However, upon his return to the area the male wss gone.

Three units from Limerick City Fire and Rescue, along with rescue boat FireSwift with a three-man swift water technician crew, were on scene once the alarm was raised at 3am,

They were accompanied the Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115, gardai, emergency paramedics and members of the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue.

Remaining on scene for over an hour, all agencies were stood down at 4.15am with no sign of the male.

It is unknown if the male entered the water.

12 hours earlier on Friday afternoon last, a young woman was rescued from the River Shannon after she was seen entering the water at the O’Callaghan’s Strand of Sarsfield Bridge.

The woman was rescued at the back of the Clarion Hotel.
