CHILDREN and parents from the community in the vicinity of the proposed gasification plant at Gortadroma braved the elements to highlight their demand for clean air in a protest at the entrance gate to the site of former West Limerick landfill.

Many of them had been present in City Hall the previous week when members of Limerick City and County Council heard that any discussion about the contract with the developers of the proposed plant would have to be held behind closed doors because of legal and corporate sensitivities.

US consortium Cadence EnviroPower was the company chosen by the council in 2014 to build a multi-million euro plant on the grounds of a closed landfill in Gortadroma which would convert 1,000 tonnes of municipal waste and 45 tonnes of tyres a day to gas to supply the national electricity grid.

The company agreed to pay the council €4 million a year to lease the site.

The plant is expected to provide 150 jobs but has still to get planning permission from An Bord Pleannalla and a waste licence from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mary and Joe O’Connor, who are sixth generation farmers living on and working the land just two kilometers from the proposed plant are fearful for the effects on their children should the plant get up and running.
“The weather was terrible but it didn’t dampen our determination,” Mary told the Limerick Post.
“This is not about any individual – this is about all of our children and what kind of world we are going to hand to them. It’s about their future,” she said.

RAGE, the action group opposing the proposed Gasification Plant at Gortadroma are hosting a public meeting at Shanagolden Hall on Thursday, February 18 at 8.00pm.

“Politicians running in the forthcoming election, local councillors and officials from Limerick City and County Council will all be invited to this meeting.  We are hoping to have a guest speaker in attendance also. We would appeal to members of the general public to support us at this time,” Mary said.
