A 13-year-old All-Ireland boxing champion has been awarded €40,000 damages after he tripped and fell at a building site when he went to retrieve his football.
A High Court sitting in Limerick this week was told that the underage bantamweight boxing champion suffered a laceration to his hand when his football went on to the grounds of an unfinished bungalow next to his mother’s home on May 22, 2011.
The young boy, who was 9-years-old at the time, required microsurgery and suffered up to a 15 per cent loss of his dexterity in his hand Mr Justice Brian McGovern heard.
Sensitivity to cold and numbing of the scar area were the only residual issues left as a result of the injury.
The court heard that the boy has regained a normal grip and went on to win the All-Ireland bantamweight title for his age group. He now intends to become a farrier.
Before approving the €40,000 offer and costs, Mr Justice McGovern asked the young boy to show him the scar on the promise that he did not “show off his boxing skills”.
