JORG Widmann, artistic partner to Irish Chamber Orchestra, returns to lead on Tuesday March 15 in the concert hall.

He brings a guest. Hailed as the piano player of the century, Igor Levit (left) will join the ICO for Mendelssohn’s early Sinfonias, with Widmann on clarinet for the Sonata for Clarinet and piano.

Works by Widmann and Weber make up the programme.

This Limerick concert, followed on March 16 by same in Dublin’s Mansion House, marks the beginning of a lengthy collaboration with the Russian Igor Levit. They coincide with the ICO’s first international residency in Heidelberg which will see the orchestra perform several concerts with him over the next three years, at the distinguished Heidelberger Frühling Festival.

“Some pianists retain a physical detachment from the piano but Levit bends close, leans in and embraces it,” notes Charlotte Eglington of the UL based orchestra.  “In his much anticipated debut with the ICO, Levit performs Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2, which oozes creativity, technical wizardry and soulful lyricism”.
