GARDAÍ have arrested two men who were filmed in a daytime brawl on a busy street in Limerick city centre.

Last week, the video clip of the street brawl emerged on social media, which showed two men stripped to the waist and fighting on William Street in full view of city centre shoppers and pedestrians.

The video, which lasted almost three minutes, captured the two men fighting as others goaded and encouraged them to settle a score.

The footage of the incident was shared on social media to thousands before it was temporarily removed. It has since been reposted.

The scenes drew widespread anger from the city business community as being an “unfair reflection of the city” and a minority of lawless thugs.

At one point in the footage, the row spills out on to the main road, stopping traffic as others circle around the protagonists.

Shoppers are seen moving into doorways to avoid the incident while others stop and video the action on their mobile phones.

The two men who were understood to be “settling a score”, were left bloodied and bruised as they walked away after a few minutes.

The video drew the attention of Gardaí and the two men were arrested and detained at Henry Street Garda Station last week before being released without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
