According to the City North representative, posters for a AAA public meeting on the fight for women’s equality and the repeal of the 8th amendment were systematically targeted by “anti-choice” activists in the city last week.

He claims the posters were spray painted, ripped and stolen.

“Anti-choice activists were also seen putting anti-abortion stickers on the posters. Posters for an event organised by Limerick Pro Choice were also systematically torn down across the city,” Cllr Prendiville insists.

“The spray painting of posters is an attempt to silence those speaking out about inequality and oppression. It will not work.”

The public meeting advertised in the targeted posters included speakers from rape crisis centres, low paid women workers, and those campaigning for a referendum in the 8th amendment.

“It was a very positive meeting, and a great success despite the attempts by someone to scupper the meeting and silence us.

“While we didn’t manage to catch whoever spray painted the posters, one eye witness did see anti-choice activists who were holding a stall in town vandalise a poster, putting their stickers over our posters. Ten of the posters were also stolen, while others were ripped.

“This attempt to silence pro-choice and women’s rights activists is despicable, and should be condemned by all those in favour of freedom of speech and organisation,” he added.
