GARDAI in Limerick have been called on to police a “gang of youths” who are entering the village of Ahane to partake in anti social behaviour.
The seriousness of the issue was highlighted last week when locals woke up to the vandalisation of a statue of hurling legend Mick Mackey.
Arguably one of the greatest hurlers of the game, Ahane GAA erected the statue in 2013 to great adoration and pride throughout the hurling and GAA communities.
However, on November 1 last, villagers woke up to find that the bronze hurley held by the Mackey statue had been broken off during a Hallowe’en night rampage. A number of weeks before, the back of the statue was damaged also.
Gardai have now been asked to step in and police a gang that locals feel are causing these anti social issues.
Neighbouring Castleconnell has seen a rise in such behaviour after a number of incidents were reported.
Villagers have described seeing an “intimidating” gang on up to six young teenagers damaging signs and setting rubbish bins on fire as a notable rise in break-ins and incidents of criminal damage have been reported.
