Europeรs top radio broadcaster and the renowned portrait artist were presented with the highest honour Limerick can bestow on a citizen at a specially convened meeting of Limerick City Council.
They now join the list of other high profile recipients of this rare title including: former US Presidents John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton; Pope John Paul 11 and successful Limerick businessman JP McManus.
Conferring the Honorary Freedom of the City on both men, Mayor of Limerick Cllr Joe Leddin said it is reserved for well known statesmen who have made a unique contribution to the common good or natives who have brought credit to the city by their contribution to the common good.
THE UNVEILING of the Terry Wogan memorial sculpture in Limerick City in memory of the late radioย presenter will take place on this Saturday, June 24.
A day of celebration and commemoration has been planned to mark theย official unveilingย of theย sculpture by Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllrย Kieran O’Hanlon, Fianna Fรกil.

Rory Breslin is the artist commissioned to createย the Terry Wogan Memorial Sculpture. Heย studied art at the National College of Art and Design. His further education saw him working in England, France, Czech Republic and Slovakia. He returned to Ireland where he co-founded the Head Sculpture Gallery in Dublin. He lectured part-time in the National College of Art and Design in figurative sculpture.ย His previous public artwork commissionsย includeย 2010 Michael Hartnett monument, bronze/limestone,ย Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.
When announcing the plan to erect the Terry Wogan memorial sculpture, Cllr O’Hanlon said, โHe was proud to be from Limerick and a wonderful ambassador for Limerick and Ireland in Britain, at a time when it was difficult.โ
On the Boardwalk between 12-5 pm, there will be aย pop-up Museum with Limerick Museum inviting Terry Wogan enthusiasts to share their memorabilia; food and coffee stalls with an outdoor seating area; outdoor cinema screen showing archival footage from RTE andย I Love Limerick, and street entertainment with Bui Bolg and The Gramophone by Donnocha Cahill. Live music will be provided by Emmaย Langford,ย Downtown Dixie Band and Boherbuoy Marching Band.
At Poor Man’s Kilkee, Harvey’s Quay, between 3-4pm unveiling of the Memorialย Sculpture will take place by Mayor of the City and County of Limerickย Cllr.ย Kieran O’Hanlon.
