Free speech advocate to mark Banned Books Week at Limerick event

CHIEFย executive of Index on Censorship, Jodie Ginsberg will deliver a talk at the Limerick Civic Trustโ€™s Autumn Lecture Series tonight (Thursday September 28) to mark Banned Books Weekย – a global series of events celebrating the freedom to read.

Ginsberg will speak about how censorship stifles debate and undermines the tenets of free and democratic societies in St Maryโ€™s Cathedral at 8pm.ย  She will comment on press freedom particularly in relation to Trumpโ€™s smearing of the media.

Organised in conjunction with ULโ€™s Kemmy Business School and the support of LIT and Limerick Council and media sponsors Irish Examiner, the six-part series of public lectures will examine many topical issues like the impact of Brexit, Trumpism, immigration, integration in multi-cultural societies, censorship and lots more.

Other speakers in the series include; former head of HSBC, Stephen Green, Shaykh Dr Uma Al-Qadri, head Imam of Al-Mustafa Islamic Educational & cultural Centre Ireland, Irish Times columnist Simon Carswell, international architect Ian Ritchie and international property develop Roger Madelin.

The lectures, which run on Thursday evenings, run until October 19 in St Maryโ€™s Cathedral.

Proceeds from the series will be used by the Limerick Civic Trust for the restoration of St Munchinโ€™s Church in the heart of Kingโ€™s Island.
