A plaque for Kate O’Brien

A PLAQUE to Limerick born novelist, playwright and author, Kate O’Brien, will be unveiled by Dr Des Fitzgerald, President UL at Ború House, Mulgrave Street on Monday October 2. Organised by The Limerick Writers’ Centre and Limerick Civic Trust, the 5.30pm event welcomes an address by Dr Patricia Lynch on the novelist at her birth place.

The commemoration is another peg in the making of Limerick Literary Trail, following on plaques to Robert Graves at The Locke Bar, Des O’Grady at The White House, Frank McCourt at South’s Bar and Richard Harris at October’s International Film Festival.

The above painting of O’Brien is by Limerick artist Cindy Fogarty, who placed it Roches Street Arts Festival 2014. She had sourced the only personal quote by Kate O’Brien on herself in papers donated to UL. It reads: “I am a moralist in that I see no story unless there is a moral conflict and the old fashioned sense of the soul and its troubling affect in human affairs.”
