IT’S a case of ‘bah humbug!’ for Limerick city shoppers this Christmas as Limerick City and County Council have cancelled free-on street parking.

The initiative, which has been in place for a number of years to bring shoppers into the city, is to be replaced by a new ‘park and ride’ facility at Upper Carey’s Road this December.

Fianna Fail councillor James Collins has criticised the local authority for not consulting with council members about the change.

“It’s a wrong decision, and certainly one which I would not have agreed with. The idea behind giving free on-street parking, be it in the morning or the afternoon was to support local traders, particularly in the city centre at their busiest time of the year.”
