Be Streetwise this Bank Holiday weekend

Thousands are set to descend on Limerick for Riverfest

GARDAI in Limerick and throughout the Southern Region are asking people to be ‘Streetwise’ this Bank Holiday Weekend.

With over 13,000 participants expected to take part in the Great Limerick run and thousands more spectators that the event brings, Limerick will be a buzz for Riverfest also.

Elsewhere, thousands of visitors will attend Ed Sheeran concerts in Cork, 20,000 will descend on Kinsale for the rugby sevens and the same will hit Killarney for the rally of the lakes.

So as Munster becomes a hive of activity for the Bank Holiday weekend, Gardai say that “whilst we will have a large Garda presence at all of these events, we are asking everyone to take a few simple precautions to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable weekend”.

Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Tony Davis urged people to “have a plan for the evening. How are you getting home? Are you taking a taxi, getting a lift or staying with a friend? Be mindful of your property. Keep your phone, wallet or purse on you at all times.

“If you find yourself in a scenario and sense there could be trouble, walk away. Call the Gardaí immediately if you feel the situation is getting out of hand.  Think of the consequences for both yourself and others if you were to hit someone.

“We want everyone to use your brains, not your fists. The consequences of a conviction for assault can seriously damage your future prospects in both employment and travel”.
