Soulscapes & Paradigms

SOUND and vision events for the public taking place at Friars’ Gate, Kilmallock this month include Wednesday 14’s Soulscapes talk by Fiann Ó Nualláin and Contact Studios’ Gerry O’Mahony’s exhibition of painting. From the art centre’s Caoimhe Reidy we hear that his ‘Paradigm II’ is a show of new work by the artist that opened on Thursday, November 8.

November’s Soulscapes continues on Wednesday 14 next at 8pm as Fiann Ó Nualláin presents ‘The nurture of Nature – how to the natural world impacts upon mind, body and soul’. He is an author, broadcaster, a columnist for the Irish Examiner and an advocate of gardening for health and wellbeing.

The Spoken Word

BELLTABLE invites you to join ‘An Evening of Spoken Word’ with Stephen James Smith and Sorcha Fox, complete with live music and poetry. Anticipate a generous half hour on Thursday 15, 8pm with Sorcha Fox first, the winner of Lingo’s New Work Fun, supported by Dublin UNESCo City of Literature. ‘Remember’ is her work,  described as “a challenge – personal and political, to look at Ireland and our role in it.”

‘Remember’ will be accompanied by an original live score from Dee Armstrong of Kíla, Lughaidh Armstrong Mayock and Megan Lawlor.

Dublin poet and playwright Stephen James Smith has 2.5million+ viewers to his poetry videos. Among other things, he writes and is commissioned to write poetry that is a celebratory narrative of Ireland. He has real currency as a performer, appearing alongside Ed Sheeran, Loah and Eddie Vedder.

Smith’s time in Limerick concerns his debut poetry collection, ‘Fear Not’ and he will be accompanied by musician Enda Reilly over the hour.

THE next Limerick Historical Society lecture will consider ‘The Life and Times of Gerald Griffin’. The lecture will be given by Dr Milo Spillane on Monday November 12 at 8pm in Room 203, Mary Immaculate College, South Circular Road. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

ArtLimerick at Milk Market

FORTY artists involved with ArtLimerick’s regular outdoor display will show original artwork at Milk Market on Sunday 18 and again on Sunday, December 9 from 11am until 4pm.

“There is a vibrant community of creatives, who are enjoying the challenge and excitement of getting together at outdoor exhibitions,” says organiser Kathy Tiernan. “We hope people will join us to chat, drink coffee and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Surreal words to Ciaran O’Driscoll

LIMERICK based poet and retired teacher, Ciaran O’Driscoll is a member of Aosdána with eight published books of poetry to his credit. His awards include the James Joyce Prize and the Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship in Poetry.

His latest work ‘The Speaking Trees’ is published by New Poetics/Ireland as is ‘Stowaway’ by Anatoly Kudryavitsky, the publisher. At City Library, Granary, ‘The Speaking Trees’ will be launched alongside ‘Stowaway’ on Thursday, November 22 at 7pm – look forward to readings by the two writers and refreshments.

From Kudryavitsky, we hear that he aims “to publish the best, most exciting Surrealist poetry of different trends and schools from around the contemporary world.”
