PATRICKSWELL Community Centre has moved a step closer to fruition after this Monday’s Metropolitan District meeting of Limerick City and County Council.

€100,000 was approved towards the construction of Patrickswell Community Centre from Limerick City West councillors’ GMA (General Municipal Allocation) Fund.

Fine Gael councillor Dan McSweeney welcomed the approval of “such a significant sum of money” towards a community centre in his native County Limerick town.

“I was delighted to be in a position to propose this project to my fellow councillors in Limerick City West a number of weeks ago and receive their support for this worthwhile project to bring it to our Metropolitan meeting for final approval,” he explained.

“Limerick City and County Council funded a Community Development Plan for Patrickswell a number of months ago and the finding of this report was to proceed with due haste to secure funding for Patrickswell Community Centre. This is the first piece of the puzzle and probably the most important.”

The City West representative also takes the view that  Patrickswell has been overlooked for the last number of years by Limerick City and County Council.

“The commitment and leadership shown by the councillors of Limerick City West will put increased pressure on Limerick City and County Council to provide community facilities in the area.

“Patrickswell has seen additional housing constructed over the last number of months housing young families and unfortunately no plans for additional facilities have been put in place.”

Cllr McSweeney added that funding for the community centre would enable the community access more funding from other streams in the future.
