EIGHT of Limerick City’s most prominent roundabouts will benefit from pollinator and biodiversity-friendly landscaping schemes commissioned by Limerick City and County Council with funding from the Heritage Council and as part of Limerick’s European Green Leaf Year.
The idea behind the scheme is to show roundabouts have the potential to be much more than traffic control features. They can also be attractive greenspaces, which greatly enhance the appearance of our cityscape and provide havens for biodiversity.
The eight roundabouts are located at Kilmallock Road, Tipperary Road, Parkway, Greenpark, Clondrinagh, Loughmore in Raheen, Ballycummin and Roxboro.
The designs are the work of local landscape architect Dave Ryan who has worked closely with Peter Cuthbert, an expert in the field of pollinator-friendly planting schemes
The unique designs are intended to reflect the character of their settings, with the more rural roundabouts incorporating wildflowers and native species, while more formal designs, based on pollinator-friendly perennials, have been chosen for the more urban locations.
Limerick City and County Council is seeking expressions of interest from companies and organisations who would like to become partners in this project and sponsor the implementation of the planting schemes.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Sheehan said, “We are delighted with the quality of the final designs which will enhance the experience of both residents and visitors to Limerick and provide a great opportunity for local businesses to raise their profile while contributing to the public good.”
Anne Goggin, co-ordinator of Limerick European Green Leaf Year said: “It is important that we lead by example and show that wildlife-friendly spaces can be hugely attractive. While all the designs are different, there is a consistent ethos running throughout which reflects the Council’s commitment to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and to making Limerick a more biodiversity-friendly city.”
