UL Hospitals Group is pleased to announce the appointment of three consultant anaesthesiologists.
Dr Kevin Doody, Dr Patrick Kennelly and Dr Hugh O’Callaghan are all from Limerick City. The appointments bring to 21 the number of consultant anaesthesiologists working in theatre and in critical care in UHL and across UL Hospitals Group.
Dr Kevin Doody:
Dr Doody graduated from Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) at University of Limerick in 2013. He completed his internship at UHL and completed Higher Specialist Training in Anaesthesiology in Ireland becoming a Fellow of the College of Anaesthesiologists in 2018.
Dr Doody has a background in pharmacy, graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 2005 and during his anaesthesiology training obtained a Masters in Healthcare Management.
Dr Doody has a strong interest in quality improvement initiatives and has introduced a number of successful QI projects while completing his training at UHL. One area of particular interest is difficult airway management and he has helped devise and implement airway simulation teaching sessions at UHL.
Dr Doody has an active interest in research and has a number of first author publication both in national and international journals.
Dr Patrick Kennelly:
Dr Patrick Kennelly graduated from the inaugural class of GEMS at the University of Limerick in 2011.
He completed his internship in the Mater Hospital in Dublin and subsequently entered Specialist Training in Anaesthesiology, which he successfully completed in 2018.
Dr Kennelly went on to complete an obstetric anaesthesia fellowship in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin and subsequently a fellowship in paediatric anaesthesia at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
Dr Kennelly has also completed a higher degree in Healthcare Management and has an active interest in postgraduate medical education.
Dr Hugh O’Callaghan:
Dr Hugh O’Callaghan graduated from Trinity College Dublin Medical School in 2003. Following his internship in UHL, he commenced postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine.
Dr O’Callaghan is a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, serving in the rank of Commandant. He is the Commanding Officer of 2 Brigade Medical Detachment Reserve and is based in St. Bricin’s Hospital, Dublin.
He served as a Medical Officer and peacekeeper on deployment with the 93rd Infantry Battalion in Liberia, West Africa in 2005 following the civil war there. He subsequently served as Senior Medical Officer with the 99th Infantry Battalion in Darfur/Chad in 2009.
Following his return to Ireland, Dr O’Callaghan commenced the Anaesthesiology training scheme. He returned to his hometown to finish his last year on the specialty training scheme in UHL in July 2019 and worked in the Intensive Care Unit throughout the recent coronavirus pandemic.
