WATCH: “A joy to watch”: McMahon picks up third consecutive Softball title

LIMERICK woman Martina McMahon picked up a third consecutive All-Ireland Senior Softball title in Crinkle HC over the weekend.

It was a fourth title overall for McMahon who defeated Kilkenny’s Ciara Mahon 21-2, 21-8 on Saturday.

Prior to the final, McMahon spoke about the adjustements she had to make as she outlined how the break proved beneficial at the beginning.

However, as the season resumed she was ready for action again and certainly proved she hasn’t missed a beat since returning.

“To be honest it took me a while to get back into it [when handball facilities re-opened]. When the travel restrictions were lifted, it was a great opportunity to travel around Ireland and see places I wouldn’t have the opportunity to see. In handball you are nearly busy every weekend, if you’re not playing you are training, so from that point of view, Covid was advantageous to me, I got to see parts of Ireland I have never seen before.

“That’s how I spent my time, I climbed Carrauntoohil and did stuff like that but no handball. At the start I was missing it and then I was kind of glad of the break for a while but the fight is definitely back and the hunger for the game is back now.”

After winning the 60×30 title, McMahon will now turn her attention to a potential small court final against a familiar opponent in Catriona Casey.

“It will be great if it goes ahead, in my head I’m still thinking about the first weekend in December. It will be difficult because it will be a one-off game now with no lead-up to.”
