LISTEN: John Kiely lauds his sides “defiant performance” in All-Ireland decider

LAST Sunday, Limerick gave arguably their most complete performance under John Kiely to date as they cruised to a 0-30 to 0-19 win over Waterford in the All-Ireland final.

It was Limerick’s second triumph in three years with Kiely transforming the fortunes of the squad since his arrival into the senior set up in 2017.

While they could have been accused of failing to find their peak for large parts of the championship, Limerick were irresistible in Croke Park as they lead from pillar to post against the Deise.

Speaking after the game, Kiely lauded the efforts of his players as they gave a performance for the ages.

“We had obviously very high expectations of ourselves in terms of how hard we wanted to work on the day and I think the players delivered on that in spades, they worked really hard from start to finish right across the pitch. It was a very defiant performance. Whatever was fired at the boys they found a way to cope with it and going forward I think we showed fantastic team work in terms of our support running and lines of running and creating wave after wave of attacks.”

“The very first play, the very first 40 seconds was a very defining piece of play, we took it forward and there was a huge resistance and we still managed to get the score. I think that set the tone for us.  But overall, just very proud of the lads. They have worked so so hard. Last year was a huge disappointment for us and to come back into it straight away and the resolve they have shown and the determination they have shown and the appetite for work right throughout the year has been immense.”
