A man rescued from a house fire in Limerick city is being treated in intensive care in hospital for serve breathing difficulties.

The 32 year old was rescued from the burning property at Island Road, by firefighters attached to Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service, on Tuesday.

The owner of the house who was not in the property at the time praised firefighters as well as neighbours and a passer-by who used hammer to break in the front door of the property to try to rescue the man inside.

Informed sources said the injured man was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital Limerick after he suffered serious breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation from the fire.

The owner, Mathew Hickey, also aged 32, said: “I’m pretty speechless at the moment, because I don’t have much, all I have is my house, I’m living here pretty much all my life.”

Mr Hickey said he wanted to “thank” all those who helped rescue his friend, and said, “if I ever get your name I’d duly like to meet you and shake your hand”.

Gardai, who do not suspect foul play, said they “attended a house fire on Island Road at around 12 midday” and a man was “treated at the scene” for injuries.
