The Limerick footballers kicked off their 2015 National League in fine form as they overcame Sligo 0-14 to 1-9 in a hard fought encounter in Kilmallock.

It was redemption for Limerick who had lost out to Sligo by two points in the 2014 All-Ireland Qualifiers.

John Broudair’s hit the ground running and with Mikey Lyons unerring in front of goal, they opened up a 0-5 to 0-1 lead inside the opening half an hour.

A late flurry from Sligo helped them reduce the gap to 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

Scores from Thomas Lee and Lyons helped Limerick into a double scores lead before Darragh Treacy received a black card.

Sligo seized the initiative and Adrian Marren’s goal helped them into a 1-8 to 0-8 advanatge.

But Sligo would lose Brian Curran who was sent off after receiving a yellow card and a black card with Limerick taking full advantage of their numerical supremacy.

They would limit Sligo to just one more score in the final fifteen with points from Seanie Buckley, Lyons, Stephen Cahill, Robert Browne, Killian Phair and Peter Nash pulling Limerick two clear for the first round win.

It would prove a costly first round defeat for Limerick as they fell 1-14 to 0-6 against Louth in Drogheda Park.

Mickey Ned O’Sullivan’s side were comfortably beaten by the Leinster side with JP Rooney’s goal putting the gloss on an impressive win for the hosts.

Limerick would be relegated at the end of the campaign, level on points with Louth and four others but falling to the bottom division due to their (-8) scoring difference after losing by 11 to the Wee county.

Despite this, Limerick would go on to contest the 2009 Munster final, falling dramatically to Cork in the decider.
