Limerick student crowned Journalist of the Year for second year running

Aย Limerick-based student,ย writing about the hardship faced by asylum seekers who come here,ย has beaten the odds, and won Journalist of the Year at the National Student Media Awards (Smedias) for the second year in a row.

Egyptian-born Mostafa Darwish – who has learned how to write in English while studying at University of Limerick – was praised by a team of experienced journalistic judgesย for his unparalleled workย on the challengesย faced byย asylum seekers in Ireland.

The 31-year-old is currently completing an MA in Journalismat the University of Limerick and wasย among over 20 UL students shortlisted at this yearโ€™s awards ceremony.

Mr Darwish offered he was โ€œsoย happyย that my stories whichย tell the stories of asylum seekersย have had such an impact and have already effected some much needed change for this vulnerable community acrossย Europeโ€.

โ€œIย alsoย am soย proudย thatย some ofย these were the stories thatย were recognised for this top award. Iย onlyย spent two years living in Limerick and studying in UL,ย butย Limerick has a huge place in my heart.โ€

โ€œThe University helped me a lot to writeย in a language that is not my native language, and ULโ€™s green campus helped me to have a peaceful time that I really needed after some tough years.โ€

Final year UL student Ivan Smyth, from Galway, was named Sports Writer of the Year, while local journalistย Christine Costello, who edited this yearโ€™s annualย UL student newspaperย Limerick Voice,ย picked up the prize for Bestย Newspaperย Layout and Design.

UL journalism lecturerย Kathryn Hayesย congratulated all ofย the ULย students who were shortlisted in this yearโ€™sย National Student Media Awards adding, โ€œI am soย happy for all of the students who picked up awards andย incredibly proud to see a record number of nominations for UL students who worked on Limerick Voice multimedia news project,ย Prodigy Magazine,ย An Focal and ULFM.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a fantastic achievementย for studentsย toย have their work recognised by key industry leadersย and a real testament to their hard work and talent,ย after what has been aย challengingย periodย for all third level students,โ€ Ms Hayes said.

The 21stย Smediaย Awardsย saw a 60% increase in entries this year featuringย the hard work ofย over 240 nominees in 43 highly contested categories.

This yearโ€™s judges include award-winning director and screenwriter Robbie Walsh, social media star James Kavanagh and various editors and producers from Ireland’s leading media organisations and high profile presenters such as Angela Scanlon, Mauraย Derrane,ย Muireannย O’Connell, and Richard Chambers.
