Health Minister confirms €26 million in funding for Limerick Hospitals projects

FIANNA Fáil TD for Limerick County and Minister of State at the Department of Higher Education, Niall Collins, has received confirmation from his party colleague and Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, that almost €26m in funding will be provided for 20 projects across Limerick under the Health Capital Plan 2021.

Minister Collins commented “Under the plan, which will be published in the coming weeks, St Camillus Hospital will receive €7.6m for a 75-bed community nursing unit to replace long stay beds as per the Social Care Priority list with St Ita’s Newcastle West receiving €3.32 million for refurbishment and 12 new beds.

Croom Hospital has been allocated €3.49m, which will fund a new orthopaedic surgical unit.

University Hospital Limerick is set to receive €9.45m. Of this funding, €900,000 will be spent on additional bed capacity with the provision of a 60 bed ward block while St Ita’s Community Hospital in Newcastle West will receive €3.2m under the Plan.

“Our entire health service has been through the most difficult 16 months and are still under severe pressure with the ongoing pandemic.

“As we come out the other side of what has been a most gruelling period, where so much has been asked of our health services, I’m delighted to see continued Government investment.

“I look forward to the progression of these long-awaited projects and I will continue to push for further investment in the region,’’ concluded Minister Collins.
