Moyross’ Wesley Joyce hopes others can “follow in my footsteps” after Galway Festival success

Limerick jockey Wesley Joyce.

WESLEYe Joyce will long remember the 2021 Galway festival as he landed a terrific success on the Emmet Mullins-trained Crowns Major in Saturday’s feature race.

He produced a wonderfully assured performance to win the €100,000 Galway Shopping Centre Handicap over 12 furlongs on the 7/1 chance, sitting just off the pace and delivering a perfectly timed challenge early in the straight to record an impressive two-length win over the Ross O’Sullivan-trained front-runner Longbourn.

Speaking after the race, the Moyross native said,

“Buzzing, over the moon. Biggest career success so far. Very happy, and very happy with the opportunities that I’m getting. Big thanks to Emmet for helping me get the leg up, it’s all down to him.”

Joyce is a graduate of the Moyross Youth Academy and he hopes that his success can provide inspiration for others in the area.

“There’s loads of lads in Moyross with plenty of ability that can go on and make good lives for themselves. Hopefully they can look up to me and try and follow in my footsteps. Hopefully get out there and make a life for themselves. Great people down there, trying to help the young lads. They don’t get paid enough for what they’re doing.”
