The Casey Red Card: Nervous wait for Limerick as the corner-forward set to miss All-Ireland final

LIMERICK corner-forward Peter Casey was shown a red card for his head-on-head collision with Waterford’s Conor Gleeson.

Casey is now facing a two game suspension for the incident, and to make matters worse for the Na Piarsaigh man, the next game is of course the All-Ireland final.

Casey is likely to miss the final unless a successful appeal process is carried out by both head coach John Kiely, and the relevant personal within Limerick GAA.

However, Kiely is yet to confirm that the appeal will take place at all. In a post game press conference, Kiely outlined that although he hasn’t seen the footage, no decisions have been made in regards to how the incident will be dealt with on behalf of Limerick Hurling.

“I do know that from talking to Peter there was a clash of heads alright, but nothing malicious or nothing of any significance really.

“For us, at the minute we will take a day or two to reflect and see what the picture looks like and take it from there. At the minute we can probably take it that he won’t be with us.”

After the game, RTÉ’s various pundits gave their views with some contrasting opinions. Na Piarsaigh teammate and close friend Shane Dowling was hopeful that there would be grounds for an appeal while Lee Chin felt it wasn’t a red card offence.

Anthony Daly argued that “it wasn’t a Zinedine Zidane style headbutt.” but Jackie Tyrrell and Donal Og Cusack both agreed that it doesn’t look good for the corner forward.
