As 2021 draws to a close, Jack Neville looks back on some of the most memorable GAA moments of the year.
While the year proved largely forgettable for most as the pandemic continued to grip the world, for the fans of Limerick GAA, there was a number of incredible moments throughout 2021 that will live long in the memory
And ahead of the new year, look back at some of the most memorable.
Limerick GAA’s Moments of the Year.
Today, Limerick smashing the record for All-Stars in a single season is looked at.
In the wake of Limerick’s 2021 All-Ireland success, all fifteen Shannonsiders that started the defeated Cork were nominated for All-Star awards. This was the second time in four years that Limerick earned that many nominations after receiving as many for the 2018 season.
That year Limerick claimed six awards but dwarfed that number in 2020 when they collected nine of the fifteen spaces up for grabs matching the achievement of Kilkenny in 1983, 2000 and 2008.
But such was the current crops year, there was expectation that Limerick could become the first side to break double figures.
And when the team was released, Limerick had done just that, smashing the previous record with twelve selections.
Sean Finn picked up his fourth consecutve award while there was a third for Cian Lynch. Kyle Hayes, Diarmaid Byrnes, Gearoid Hegarty and Tom Morrissey were chosen for the second successive year while Declan Hannon also collected his second gong.
There were five players chosen for the first time in Barry Nash, William O’Donoghue, Darragh O’Donovan, Peter Casey and Seamus Flanagan.
An awesome achievement and one that is unlikely to ever be matched.
