WATCH | “We still have work to do” | Billy Lee not getting carried away after Limerick’s win over Longford

BILLY Lee’s Limerick kicked off their 2021 National League campaign with a well-deserved 4-9 to 1-11 win over Longford in the Gaelic Grounds.

Limerick were 3-5 to 0-7 to the good at the half following a goal blitz. Stand out performer of the half Cillian Fahy contributed 1-3 in that timeframe.

Longford came within two after 71 minutes as substitute Darragh Doherty found the net. Fortunately, Limerick broke the length of the field with James Naughton hitting the net to secure the win.

“Two points won’t keep us in any division.

“It’s a nice start it gives a bit of momentum it gives a bit of belief, but we still have work to do I think,” said Billy Lee when asked about what the win meant for the teams belief.

The Limerick manager continued on to say.

“I think Longford can count themselves a small bit unlucky they had chances. We proved ourselves to be more clinical when the goal opportunities came and unfortunately from Longford’s point of view they weren’t. I think that’s what separated the two teams tonight.”

The start to the game from a Limerick contest was very impressive and helped separate themselves from Longford for huge periods of the game. Longford’s response was impressive as Lee alluded to the character of both sides.

“When you’re playing at home you want to hit the ground running and they certainly did. It helps teams settle faster and obviously puts the opposition under a little bit more pressure, but good teams absorb that and bounce back, and I think Longford did that in abundance.”

“I was very conscious of the games situation, but we put up some reasonable scores. It wouldn’t have totally been unfair with how we were playing in the first half you know in terms of our finishing and our opportunities the focus was there. With what I saw in the second half I was kind of half expecting it but its great to get out with a win, what it tells you is that you’re never over the line in any of these games in any division you’re in until the final whistle.

“They proved themselves as a strong opposition and I think they’ll trouble a lot of teams as they go forward.

“That’s been the plan as you go from one step to another, you can’t just expect fellas to be at the top of their game at this level in year one. Sometimes you have to go through hard journey’s, and we have done that and we keep bouncing back.”
