Brave Limerick fall in Camogie League opener with Kilkenny

A new look Limerick put in a valiant performance against the defending champions.

John Lillis’ first game in charge of the Limerick Camogie side ended in defeat on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 1-18 to 1-10 by Kilkenny in Callan in the first round of the 2022 League.

With just nine survivors from their previous championship game last year, Limerick put it up to the 2020 All-Ireland champions in their home patch.

Limerick hit the ground running and scores from Caoimhe Costello and Rebecca Delee had the Shannonsiders 0-2 to 0-1 to the goof after seven minutes.

But 1-4 on the bounce from Kilkenny had them firmly in command midway through the opening half.

Delee and Costello added Limerick’s only other scores in the half as Kilkenny took a 1-9 to 0-4 advantage into the dressing rooms.

The sides traded the first four scores of the second half with Costello grabbing a brace.

The Adare started two more before Delee raised a green flag for Limerick to reduce the deficit to 1-14 to 1-8 with 48 on the clock.

But Kilkenny responded with three of the next four scores to curb Limerick’s momentum. Costello and Sarah O’Brien rounded out the scoring for the visitors who now face Cork in round two in three weeks time.
